Stock Options Trading For More Profits And Reduced Losses

Stock options trading is an excellent way to increase your profits and reduce your losses when investing in the stock markets. Stock options are basically used in two ways, to increase profits and to give you some kind of insurance to protect your investment against losses. Though it may sound complicated, once you understand the fundamentals stock option trading becomes really simple.

Stock Options Trading vs. Buying and Selling Stocks Directly

Numerous investors prefer stock trading options over directly buying and selling stocks. The reason for this is because it gives them more flexibility and requires a smaller amount of investment. A stock trading option offers you more choice and less risk. When you purchase a stock outright, you've got to pay the full price and the market situation can drive it up or down quickly at any time. Depending on your investment strategy (short or longterm) you may end up making money or losing money. In the highly volatile world of finance sometimes there is just no way to predict which way the tides will turn, no matter how experienced you might be. But where there is high volatility there is also always a big opportunity.

Stock Options Trading For More Flexibility

Stock options trading offers you the right to buying or selling any specified stock at a fixed price within the specified time frame or at a specified date. As a stock options owner you are free to do with your options whatever you want. You can execute your right to buy stocks according to the terms stated in your stock options contract or to sell them, depending on the choice of options you possess, be they either call or put options. You have no responsibility whatsoever to actually execute the options, that is, if it doesn't make sense, you just let the options expire. Thus your potential risk is limited to the amount you invested into the stock options, which is significantly lower than if you had bought the stock itself.

Most stock options are traded daily, which adds flexibility and liquidity to your investment strategy. Many corporate investors such as pension funds or mutual funds are always looking for good opportunities to gradually increasing their portfolio through buying additional stocks of certain companies. To them, buying stock options to get good pricing in advance is an excellent way to enlarge their portfolio over time and it makes it more secure for them. Likewise, in order to protect the value of their stock portfolio, buying "put" options gives them the right to sell stock (they own) at a price they chose, which reduces their risk of loss.

Stock options can be used for the purpose of stock options trading (stocks you don't own) for the sake of trading these options and to make profit from it. They can also be used as a tool to acquiring additional stocks (stocks you want to buy) into your portfolio. And then, stock options can also serve as an insurance to securing the stocks you already own against loss.

During the stock options trading time period, a transaction may or may not take place. Once the deadline has been reached the contract is over and neither party is required to do anything. It is interesting that in Europe, the expiration date is the only date a transaction can take place, but in the United States a transaction can take place any time during the term of the contract.

Stock Option Trading Acronyms

Let me give you here some terms you must understand when you want to engage in trading stock options. One is ATM, which stands for at-the-money. This basically means that the price stays close to its original rate. The second is OTM which means out-of-the-money, and is when the price is too far off the strike price for the investor to profit. ITM means in-the-money and allows the contract holder to make money. These are just a few things you should know about stock options. Although they are less risky than other types of trading, options do carry risk. The risk is that they do represent only rights to either buy or sell at a specified price and at a specified time or date. With a stock you are shareholder of a real company, but with a stock option you only possess the right to either buy or sell such stock at a fixed price.

To learn more about stock options trading, consider reading publications like the Wall Street Journal. There are also magazines dedicated to trading. And, there are websites like CNN Money or books from experts as well that can teach you about stock options trading. To find the appropriate literature it is smart to ask your investment advisor for reference. Thus you can inform yourself intelligently on the workings of stock options trading.
